Typically, only 20-30% of claims are approved at the reconsideration appeal. While this percentage appears low, do not be discouraged.  Filing an appeal requires an extensive amount of paperwork and medical records. Typically, claims are denied during this first appeal stage simply because of missing records/paperwork.  Severity of the case has little influence on the judgment at this time.

1. Do not make any statements that may negatively influence your claim.
2. Make a checklist of each form and record necessary. Make sure you have a photocopy of each for your personal records.
3. Make sure forms are completely filled out, reviewed, and notarized if necessary.
4. When you describe your illness, use accurate and clear wording.
5. Keep your medical records up to date and continue to receive treatment as recommended by your doctor.
